The members of the ANC gathered at the Pietermaritzburg city hall to celebrate the day which has paved the country’s democracy. This year marks 67 years since the freedom chatter was adopted in Kliptown, Soweto.
Members of the party attended in their numbers, singing and dancing in celebration. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has described the freedom carter as the important and significant in the South African revolution “It is a blueprint and the guide to the future society that we are building” He said
Over the years the ANC has been at the centre of the problem in the country with corruption and lack of job opportunities amongst other things. There are questions as to whether the ANC-led government has been able to implement any of the principles contained in the charter. Zikalala said although the ANC should be concerned, it has implemented some of the principles in the freedom charter.” There are qualitative advancements and achievements we have scored but equally, there are areas where we have lacked implementations. I think we have done well to create human rights and deepened democracy” He said
The premier also called for fair treatment among the ANC members saying all those who are accused of wrongdoings should be investigated not only certain individuals. It should not that there are people who will be investigated and others not investigated. The freedom charter says all shall be equal before the law and therefore all people should be treated the same because if you say so and so will not be investigated it means that person is advantageous, I am not dealing with the individual but I’m dealing with the principle, said Zikalala.
The Premier has emphasised that party is working toward rebuilding itself to ensure that all that is in the freedom charter is implemented
