Easter Cape health department Director General Dr Litha Matiwane says the Mathanol findings cannot yet be used as the cause of death for the 21 Enyobeni Tavern deaths, as more tests will be conducted at the lab. Police Minister Bheki Cele added on in ruling out a link connecting the 21 Enyobeni Tavern deaths to that of the mass shootings at taverns.
Government officials in the Eastern Cape announced a rule out for stampede and overconsumption of alcohol, as a result of the 21 deaths of young people who were found dead at Enyobeni Tavern on 26 June 2022. Dr Matiwane, confirms from all the 21 deceased, a detection of methanol which is not meant for drinking was found in the blood. Officials have not made further allegations relating to the alcohol being fake or home made.

The public brought up claims of witnesses alleging free alcohol was made available to the under aged patrons, which they say should be a a breakthrough for the case, also looking at the owner being allowed to take the stock from the premises. Mathanol is allegedly use to produce home made brew and is also being allegedly used by individuals who manufacture fake alcohol behind clothes doors and sell at a cheaper price.
