Cristiano Ronaldo scored a 94th minute Stoppage time winner to secure a 2-1 win for Manchester united against Villarreal in their group F tie at Old Trafford in Manchester, England yesterday.
The Portuguese superstar also set another champions league record surpassing his former Real Madrid teammate and legend, Iker Casillas, to become the all time most appearances record holder in the competition after making his 178th appearance last night. In a rather underwhelming performance by the red devils, they managed to find the back of the net twice against the Spanish outfit with a 60th minute equaliser from Brazilian fullback, Alex Telles, after Villarreal had opened the scoring in the 53rd minute through Spanish striker Paco Alcacer.
Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, made multiple second half substitutions which were instrumental in United’s victory with Fred and Jesse Lingard involved in the build up to the 94th minute winner by Ronaldo with the score line ending 2-1 at full time in United’s favour. Solskjaer heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo in his post match interview with BT Sport.
“Sometimes it’s not about a pass there, a pass there, it’s the crowd, and when you have Cristiano on the pitch, there’s always a chance,” Said Solskjaer, as per the Guardian. “Cristiano is so good in front of goal, and he has an impact on everyone,” added Solskjaer, as per the Guardian.
The second round of the Champions league group stages continued last night with Atalanta and Young Boys also in group F in action as well with Atalanta winning the match through a Matteo Pessina goal in the 68th minute. Bayern Munich thumped Dynamo Kiev 5-0, Barcelona suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat away to Portuguese outfit Benfica, Juventus stunned Chelsea 1-0 through a second half goal by Federico Chiesa, Salzburg picked up a 2-1 win over Lille, Wolfsburg and Sevilla shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw, Zenit thumped Malmo FF 4-0.
