On Thursday 10 March, Justice Raymond Zondo has been appointed as the next chief Justice according to section 173(3) of the constitution by President Cyril Ramaphosa after being an acting chief Justice since Mogoeng Mogoeng stepped down in 2021.
As he’s been appointed it means the position of Deputy Justice vacant will be open.

Zondo was appointed first as a judge of the labour court in 1996 and was also the Judge President of the labour and labour appeals courts between 2000 and 2010.

According president Cyril Ramaphosa statement, the decision was taken following the consultation with the Judiciary service commission and leaders on national assembly towards the four nomination panel which was Justice Mbuyiweli Madanga, Justice Mandisa Maya, Justice Dunston Mbambo, and Justice Raymond Zondo

He also mentioned that “the chief Justice position carries a great responsibility in our democracy and the chief Justice stand as the champion of the rights of all South Africans and bears the responsibility for ensuring equal access to Justice and he’s confident that Zondo will work with distinction in this position”.
