Former City of Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane’s passing, confirmend by the family spokesperson, Mike Maile. “He sadly did not respond positively to treatment and with heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we confirm that we lost our beloved Mpho this afternoon. His passing has deeply pained us; let me add that he was certified dead 5:54 pm.”
Moerane family and his political party the African National Congress had prior to the death, say he was in a serious but stable condition, shutting down rumours that claimed Moerane’s death, hours before the actual confirmation from the family. The former mayor was involved in an accident last Monday night, travelling from Alexandra to his home in Mondeor.
Moerane died running for the position to become the ANC Johannesburg chairperson. He was for a shorter period, the mayor of Johannesburg between 1 October 2021 and 22 November 2021 following the death of Jolidee Matongo who also died from a car accident. Matongo also stepped in as Mayor of johannesburg after the passing of Geoff Makhubo. Moerane served city of johannesburg as a member of the mayoral council.
Information detailing his memorial service and funeral will be announced as soon as the family or his political party, issues a statement. Moerane leaves behind his wife, Fikile, and four children.
