36 year old Eastern Cape Former Municipal Chief Financial Officer is sentenced to six years imprisonment for fraud and money laundering.
Gcobani Mntumni, who was a financial officer at the Mbhashe municipality is said to have allegedly added bank accounts belonging to his siblings and friends in the municipality payroll.This matter was reported to the Hawks serious Commercial Crime investigation based in Mthatha for investigation.
Mntumni was sentenced on Monday to ten years imprisonment and four years of his sentence were suspended.
He defrauded the municipality of R304 000.
Police spokeperson warrant officer Bonnie Nxumalo said, “the municipality paid the ghost employees. The fraudulent activities were discovered in March 2015.”
In March 2015, Mntumni was released on bail. He pleaded guilty on 23 February 2022 after numerous court appearances, leading to his sentence.
