The South African Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two immigration officers and an Assistant Director from the Department of Home Affairs in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, for corruption on Tuesday, 09 November 2021.

According to the SAPS, the three suspects were allegedly demanding money from foreign nationals owning shops around the area claiming they were in the country illegally.

“The trio allegedly demanded money from Foreign Nationals owning shops around Ermelo town as from January 2021, claiming that they are illegal in the country,” the SAPS said

“The complainant then reported the matter to the local Police Station and an investigation was launched by the Anti-Corruption Unit. An operation was conducted where the three suspects were arrested yesterday, 09 November 2021, after receiving trap money and was found in possession of the suspects,” added the SAPS.

According to the SAPS, the Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has lauded the work of the police and further reiterated that the police will continue to do everything in their power to root out corruption in the province and that no one is above the law and perpetrators will be held to account irrespective of their positions.

The suspects are expected to make their first appearance today at the Ermelo Magistrate’s court.
