The hunt down for the Sweetwaters gunman has been maximised

KZN police spokesperson, Lt Colonel Nqobile Gwala has confirmed that police have deployed maximum resources to the scene of a deadly tavern shooting in Pietermaritzburg, Sweetwaters area.

In the shooting Four people were killed and eight wounded. “The team will be working around the clock to track down and bring to book those responsible for this shooting,” says Lt Colonel Gwala. Eight patrons were admitted to the hospital after Saturday night’s attack.

Police say it’s understood two men entered the establishment and opened fire on the patrons.

After the mass shooting of 12 people, they drove off in a vehicle. Bullets and 9mm cartridges were found on the scene.

Lt Colonel Gwala says the victims were aged between 30 and 45 years. “Charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated currently.” Provincial police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has condemned the shooting and has deployed members of Crime Intelligence, forensic experts, and tactical unit to form part of an investigation team led by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa urges security agencies and communities to work together to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to book. “As a nation, we cannot allow violent criminals to terrorise us in this way, regardless of where such incidents may occur. As a government, citizens, and structures of civil society, we must all work together even more closely to improve social and economic conditions in communities. We must reduce violent crime and stamp out the illicit circulation of firearms,” the President said on Sunday.
