The student accused of rape at the University of Stellenbosch, appeared briefly at the Stellenbosch Magistrate court on Thursday where he was charged with two counts of rape. The 18-year-old has been ordered to stay away from the 19-year-old girl.
This case comes at a bad time for the University, as it is already in the spotlight with the student who urinated on another student’s belongings. The accused was arrested on Wednesday after the rape had occurred at a residence in Victoria Street, Stellenbosch. The accused is set back to court on the 29th of June 2022, giving enough time for the investigations that are to follow.
The police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the rape case reported to the police by the 19-year-old victim is being investigated by the Stellenbosch FCS unit. “the Rector and management of the university condemns all form of crimes and any infringement of human rights including gender-bases violence in the strongest possible terms and is taking immediate action in terms of supporting the victim, investigation and disciplinary processes.” The statement by the University rector and management said.
