Premier Soccer League launch new tournament DSTV Compact Cup

Premier Soccer League Chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, addressed the media at the PSL headquarters on Monday, 13 December 2021. Dr. Irvin Khoza announced that the PSL has agreed to launch a new tournament in January 2022 called the DSTV Compact Cup.

The tournament will comprise of four teams made up of two coastal groups and two inland groups namely Coastal 1 and Coastal 2 and Inland 1 and Inland 2. Coastal 1 will comprise of teams from KwaZulu Natal namely Golden Arrows, Amazulu FC, Royal AM and Maritzburg United. Chippa United, Cape Town City, Stellenbosch FC and Baroka FC (exception) make up the Coastal 2 group. Inland group 1 will include Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and TS Galaxy whilst Mamelodi Sundowns, Supersport United, Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants make up the Inland group 2.

“In all these streams we’re gonna ask each team to make available their players except for those that are called for the AFCON they won’t be available,” Dr. Khoza said.

“There is gonna be a pool of players that are gonna be set out in the public for selection of a team from coastal 1 to make up a team. Coastal 1, Coastal 2, Inland 1, Inland 2, were gonna have four teams,” added Dr. Khoza.

Dr. Khoza announced that the supporters are going to choose their preferred players and categories of players and their respective positions [Goalkeepers, Defenders, Midfielders, Strikers], are going to be set out to prevent teams being made up of 10 ‘strikers’.

“In each team we’re gonna have about 5 players into the block [Category] together with a player from the Diski Challenge to be included,” said Dr.Khoza.

The PSL chairman also revealed that each team will have to include one player from 4 selected Multi choice Diski Challenge. Each team from the respective streams will comprise of 26 players including 2 Goalkeepers, 8 Defenders, 8 Midfielders, 4 Strikers and 4 Diski Challenge players.

The fans will also be allowed to select their preferred technical teams (coach and assistant coach), however, the PSL will appoint independent doctors and physio therapists.

The tournament will take place from the 22nd to the 29th of January 2022 with the winners set to be awarded a million rands [R1 Million]
