Landlord killed by tenant in Navalsig, while attempting to collect rent. After a disagreement over rent money with her landlord, Navalsig police detained a 67-year-old tenant.
On Wednesday, October 13th, 2021, at approximately 20:33, a 67-year-old renter was allegedly sitting in the balcony with her landlord’s wife when the 63-year-old landlord arrived and accused her of not paying rent, threatened to turn off her electricity.
An altercation erupted when he entered the main home on his way to the main switch in the bedroom. The argument allegedly escalated into a fight in the bedroom, when the landlord allegedly strangled the renter by holding her down on top of the bed.
The 67-year-old renter allegedly reached for a glass plate and smashed it against the landlords head, causing a severe cut in the neck and significant bleeding. He was declared dead at the scene when emergency services were summoned. The 67-year-old woman has been charged with murder and will soon appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court.
Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, the Free State Provincial Commissioner, asked Free Staters to develop alternate ways to deal with disagreements in order to avoid such terrible situations. “Let us try to speak verbally and appropriately address concerns without getting into arguments.” According to the Commissioner of the Free State Police,
