Ghana kick started their World Cup Qualification of the Group G campaign with a win against Ethiopia. They locked horns with Ethiopia on Friday evening, 1 September at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and got their winning goal against Ethiopia through W Mubarak on the 35th minute.
Ghana played their second match of the campaign against their arch rivals South Africa on Monday evening at the FNB Stadium. Bafana Bafana and the Black Stars were meeting for the 12th time in the encounter , having previously played one on one 11 times with Bafana winning 2 of those matches and Ghana winning 4 with 4 draws.
The black stars were looking for consecutive wins and aiming to take full control of Group G meanwhile Bafana were looking to keep their World Cup Qualification hopes alive.
The match started on a high note as both teams created chances upfront but failed to convert. Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s goal on the 83rd minute for Bafana Bafana saw Ghana dropping points and South Africa taking control of Group G with 4 points.
Akonnor’s job has been under scrutiny following the recent loss to Bafana Bafana and questionable player call-ups and contested line ups. This led to him and his two Assistants being fired with immediate effect from their duties.
The GFA is set to find a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches for The Black Stars within the next 72 hours.
Ghana will face Zimbabwe in the next round of the World Cup Qualifications in October 2021.
