Hugo Broos will be announcing the official 31-man Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers this Thursday, 19 August.
After failing to qualify for the last two editions of the global showpiece, in Brazil and Russia, the South Africans will begin their quest to Qatar next month. They will open their qualifiers campaign away to neighbours, Zimbabwe on 3rd of September.
While Broos was spotted in the stands in Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 quarterfinal match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon, he is yet to officially take charge of a Bafana Bafana match. after having spent the vast majority of his time at the helm back in his homeland having Covid-19 vaccination.
Nevertheless, he is expected to place a heavy emphasis on young up and coming talent as he did in his first squad announcement. Players like Evidence Makgopa, Thabiso Kutumela and Bongokuhle Hlongwane are a big part of his plans for the future of the national side.
These matches will finally give South Africans an idea of how the 69-year-old Belgian coach is thinking, as he is yet to coach the side since his appointment in May. The well-travelled mentor led Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title in Gabon.
But it remains to be seen what type of combinations Hugo Broos will select for the all-important qualifiers as he has made it clear that Bafana must rebuild from the team that failed to qualify for next year’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
