Mamelodi Sundowns Knockout Kaizer Chiefs | In A Penalty Shootout

Mamelodi Sundowns locked horns with Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, in the MTN8 Quarter Finals competition.

The two giants were drawn against each other in the MTN8 draw as Amasandawana finished in 1st position, while Amakhosi finished 8th in the 2020/21 DStv Premiership. In this epic encounter the two Giants were meeting for the 100th  time today.

In the opening half Mamelodi Sundowns opened the scoring sheet through Peter Shalulile in the 10th minute with an assist from Lyle Lakay. Temba “Mshishi” Zwane extended Mamelodi Sundowns lead in the 23rd minute, Amakhosi managed to pull one back before half-time through Bernard Parker  in the 38th  minute. Amakhosi went into the half-time trailing by 2-1.

In the second half Mamelodi Sundowns lead was short-lived as Kaizer Chiefs introduced Keagan Dolly as a substitute coming in for Kgaugelo Sekgota. In his first touch, Dolly assisted Khama Billiat and Billiat converted it into a goal in the 59th minute making the score line a draw. Both teams had a number of chances but failed to convert, they weren’t separable as it ended 2-2. The game headed into Extra-Time and they still weren’t separable.

The match resulted into a penalty shootout, which saw Mamelodi Sundowns progress to the Semi-finals after winning 2-1 in the penalty shootout . Bafana Ba Style will take on Abafana Bes’thende in the semi finals, date and venue are yet to be announced.
