After years of pretending to live in space since the 1960s, when he played Captain James T. Kirk on the hit television series “Star Trek.” William will be heading to space for the first time at the age of 90.
US tech billionaire Jeff Bezos’s space travel company Blue Origin confirmed that William Shatner would be taking off from Texas on 12 October.The award-winning Canadian actor, William Shatner, will be on the next Blue Origin flight, this will be the company’s second human spaceflight.
He will be alongside Blue Origin, vice president of mission and flight operations, Audrey Powers, Co-founder of a software company specializing in clinical research, Chris Boshuizen, and former Nasa engineer, Glen de Vries, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin announced on Monday. The 90 year old actor will become the oldest person to have flown into space.
This flight follows Blue Origin’s first human flight which took place on July 20,it included, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, along with his brother, an 82-year-old aviation pioneer, wally funk of the space race, and Blue origin’s first customer ,an 18 year old student by the name of Oliver Daemen.
“I’ve heard about space for a long time now,” William Shatner said in a press release. “I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle.”
Just like with the previous flight, the journey is expected to last about 10 minutes and will take the crew just beyond the Karman Line – the most widely recognized boundary of space which lies 100km (60 miles) above the Earth.
