Olisa Ndah’s own goal wins Kaizer Chiefs 117th Soweto Derby

Olisa Ndah’s own goal was enough to grant Kaizer Chiefs the 117th Soweto Derby bragging rights at a packed FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kaizer Chiefs came into the encounter as underdogs of the Soweto Derby having won the last four derbies, with their DStv Premiership last five games results saying the opposite. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates came into the match in better form.

Orlando Pirates were the dominant side in the opening stages, as they forced the hosts to defend deep, with the best of which saw Lorch dipping a shot from outside the box which was tipped over the crossbar by Brandon Peterson.

Chiefs later settled into the game as they threatened the opening goal via a fine shot by Du Preez; however, it was saved by goalkeeper Chaine. The teams cancelled each other out midway the quarter-hour as they encounter went into halftime goalless.

As the second stanza kicked off, Orlando Pirates were forceful as they attacked Kaizer Chiefs through counter-attacks, the Sea Robbers were later reduced to 10 men after Innocent Maela was red carded for bringing down Basomboli.

The visitors sacrificed with Lorch as they brought in Olisa Ndah to make up for the gap left by Maela. As the game went by, Chiefs were unable to break down Pirates Defense. With 15 minutes to go, Zwane made a tactical change bringing in Caleb Bimenyimana taking out Sithebe.

The Amakhosi then claimed the lead on the 89 minute through Olisa Ndah own goal header.

Pirates almost came up with an immediate reply but Brandon Peterson was on high alert to secure Amakhosi’s victory.

The team clad in black and gold will feel encouraged by their performance against Pirates, having been the better side for large swathes of the match, though they continue to lack a killer instinct in the final third
