The biggest shock of the round took place at Lucas Masterpieces Stadium as Gauteng’s ABC Motsepe League Stream A log leaders Dondol Stars defeated high-flying SuperSport United 2-1 on Wednesday evening . The clash had all the ingredients of a David versus Goliath giant-killing act since SuperSport have never lost to lower-league opposition.

United’s formation raised eyebrows as out of favour forward Thamsanqa Gabuza was put in the line of defence alongside Bilal Baloyi, while Marmour Niang and, Zakhele Lepasa were handed their first start.

The host’s broke the deadlock 20 minutes into the game when Siyabonga Nhlapo towered a header to hand Matsatsantsa the lead following, Jamie Webber’s corner. Dondol began their search for an equaliser as they started dominating in terms of ball possession, but were unable to equalise and went into the halftime trailing behind.

The visitors entered the second half in high spirits and levelled matters five minutes into the second half through Rele Molefe’s close range shot. Matsatsantsa had the chance to retake the lead through Zakhele Lepasa’s header but Gumede rose to the occasion and denied Lepasa.

The visitors later doubled their lead through Surprise Monama’s low shot deflection and it was too little too late for Matsatsantsa to get back into the game as Dondol weathered the storm and secured a spot in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16.
