Water and Sanitation Minister, Senzo Mchunu is on a two-day visit to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to address the intervention by the national government in the water crises that the metro is facing.
It is estimated that the dam will run dry in the region within 20 days. Speaking to the media Mchunu said “There is a looming crisis which requires us to intervene accompanied that looming crisis as the challenging situation in Nelson Mandela Bay in terms of water service authority in meeting their responsibility but that has been exacerbated by the fact that we are nearing day zero”
Mchunu says in dealing with the crises they will need to mitigate the drought, reduce water consumption and extend the supply. He has said that they have a formidable team to intervene led by the Amatola Water board working with the technical side of the municipality. “ We are confident that we are going to avoid the day zero with this kind of intervention the way we planned”.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Eugene Johnson has welcomed the government intervention. We will cooperate with the government and the Amatola water board, we will be signing an agreement with the city, the ministers, and Amatola water board” said Johnson
Mchunu has said that the daily water consumption will be reduced from 280 mega litres to 230 mega litres and has urge the residence to use water sparingly
