Thubelihle High School shut down over safety concerns

Thubelihle

Parents and the school governing body (SGB), closed down Thubelihle High School. They closed the school following safety concerns, Teacher and learners of Thubelihle High School in Soweto, Gauteng were not allowed into the school. The school was labeled as a health hazard.

The parents of learners attending at the school claimed that the state of the school is the reason for their protest. They also describe the school as a health hazard, they were left with no choice but to close the school down. As their concerns for the safety of their children were disregarded and not addressed. The parents also claimed that some classrooms don’t have any doors or windows, this hasn’t been the most conducive learning environment. This happened because the school has been undergoing renovations for the past five years. The safety concerns have to do with the state of the roofs and the poor drainage.

A learner described the state of the toilets in the school, “it’s very bad because the toilets are not clean, so sometimes you don’t even go there”. The Department met with the parents and the SGB, they agreed to supply the school with mobile classrooms in order for learning to continue.
