The young and creative artist Dzulani Trevor Sidogi aged 33 from Tshipako outside Thohoyandou, turns art into glamor, showcasing his Vhavenda roots, most especially to those who do not know the Vhavenda culture. Using wood, clay, boxed, and more. Dzulani describes his work as a “GOD GIVEN TALENT.“
The talent within him started at his early age, during his primary day at the age of 10 years. He says he was more focused then ,especially when they were instructed to submit projects, so those moments, he used to cherish them the most as they gave him the opportunity to do what he loves and the teachers and principals where very fond of his work, keeping his work in the office, and that made him proud, seeing that finally other people believed in him at a time when his family didn’t pay much attention towards his talent, seeing it as a hobby whereas to him it was a career choice.
In 2008 during the times when stadiums for the 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP were underway, he used his effort to build Mosses Mabida Stadium using the cardboard. Unfortunately as he was in Venda, he didn’t get a chance to land to Gauteng and showcase his work but because miracles work in wonders his work was shown on TV on SABC 2 news and on Phlalaphala fm.
He even posted his work on Facebook, Twitter, where the likes of DJ Oskido, DJ Fresh, AKA, etc. became very fond of his work, they even contributed cash flow when he’ was in need struggling financial so he can put food on the table. He faced challenges as an artist, with lack of materials, store to sell his work, having to travel to his local Town Thohoyandou to sell.
In 2018, he was honored by DJ Oskido when he was amazed by the young man’s work, which he saw in the newspaper, took his time to call Dzulani to show his appreciation and love towards his work, and also offered the young man a trip to Durban where all expenses were paid. All that made him proud seeing that he that he was acknowledged.
Dzulani has a goal in which he believes his hard work will pay off in future, he want to have his very own local museum, where all his art work will be shown to tourists, be able to have apartments where he will sell off his work, a huge garden, big enough to accommodate more people for picnics and photoshoot.
His advice to young people is that “know your worth at a young age, believe in yourself enough to see that you have potential and use it because these days the youth is into drugs and alcohol abuse they have forgotten about their worth so to those youth out there who still believe in change they must work hard.”
