Government condemned at Debra Fraser’s memorial service

Deborah Fraser dies at 56

The memorial service of gospel star Deborah Fraser took plat at the House of Treasures Ministries in Alberton on Thursday 19 May and things turn around quickly when Advocate Ike Khumalo took to the podium before Vuyani Mpofu, followed by Chicco Twala. Ike turned the service dramatic after taking the chance to condemn the government for the treatment they render to artist in South Africa.

According to Khumalo, the government has failed in offering support to artists for their work, he says they however always make their way to memorial services of late artists. “I can never sit here and pretend that it is normal. This government has disrespected Fraser. Sis’ Debs was a big star and the department was never there for her. She was fighting alone.”

The advocate says the governments neglects their artist and does not do right by them. “At the end of the day, all these government officials have a monthly salary while artists don’t have that. So, it cannot be normal. Let them take R10million from Nathi Mthethwa’s R22 million  flag money and send it to Debs’s kids,” he said before getting off the stage.

Upon stepping off, adding with vulgar language, Khumalo says Fraser is one one of the artists who never got support from the government, he further gave the state an ultimatum to rather give R10million to Fraser’s children to prove that they are for the artists.

After Khumalo, it was Vuyani Mpofu who also took the moment as well to reprimand the state for their treatment towards artist. “I agree with the gentleman [Khumalo] that the government should play its role,” Mpofu said .

He said he understood where Khumalo came from, described the late Fraser as a great star, praising her for making music that “touched millions of South Africans”. Followed by Mpofu, music legend Sello “Chicco” Twala also added his few, saying the legendary Fraser contributed greatly to the music industry and did not deserve to die in a public hospital, calling on the industry to make up a medical aid scheme for artists and avoid having more artist die at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
