A gruesome event took place earlier in the week, shocking South Africa while awakening the trauma and anger for women in South Africa.

The body of a 23-year-old Nosicelo Mtebeni, was found in a suitcase, left on the street of East London in Quigney. Mtebeni’s murder was heart breaking as not only was she put in the suitcase but her murderer dismembered the body before putting it in the suitcase, with a plastic bag containing other body parts and left on the street by her alleged boyfriend Aluta Pasile.

The University of Fort Hare bid farewell to Mtebeni with an official memorial service, where her friends and family came through to share their memories of Mthebeni with the university. Mthebeni was a final year LLB Law student, at the time of her murder.

Phelo Nkohla, a friend to the victim says she knew Mtebeni for four years and will miss the supportive friend with a huge heart she found in Mtebeni. Friends and family have expressed a hole left in them and the horror they must live with for the rest of their lives, a sorrow brought to them by the suspect, Pasile.

Nosicelo during Women’s month has been added to the Gender Based Violence statistics, regarding domestic abuse, also marking the anniversary of Uyinene Mrwetyana, a student who was also murdered during women’s month at a post office. Mtebeni 25-year-old accused boyfriend, made a brief appearance at the East London Magistrate court on Monday where he abandoned his bail.
