A moment of celebration outside the Orkney Magistrates Court, following multiple court appearances and postponements, local drivers (tambai) on Tuesday 20 June, were released on free bail, a year later after their arrest in Kanana.
A number of community members along with families, filled up the court, in support of the seven local drivers who were taken in, for allegedly assaulting a male individual. The drivers were arrested last year June, with the first arrest made on the 12th and the final arrest made 23 June 2022. Kanana has seen an increase in crime, conducted by young individuals of the community.
Their bail was granted on Tuesday in Orkney, after the first was denied, followed by postponements and having to change legal team. Only six of the accused were released out of the seven arrested, and are set to make an appearance once again on the 4th of June. Family members of the accused shared their excitement and extended their gratitude to community members who supported them after a year of constant court attendance.
