Ellie Simmonds confirms retirement from professional swimming.

The British born swimmer announced last week in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics final swimming games that she will call it quits. Ellie Simmonds made her debut as a swimmer in Beijing 2008 at the age of 13 and has by far won eight Paralympic medals. The five times Paralympics gold medalist was selected as one of the Great Britain’s flagbearers in Japan.

Ellie Simmonds made a name for herself as she is now one of well decorated athletes in Britain as she won double gold medals in her debut in 2008, Beijing, Simmonds further extended the number of her gold medals in London four years later. She also won gold at Rio 2016.

The 26-year-old Simmonds failed to make it to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics podium after finishing fifth in the final race of S6 400m freestyle, Simmonds got herself disqualified in her final race as she allegedly failed to touch the wall at return after having her disqualification overturned on appeal, Simmonds got reinstated to finishing 5th.

After returning home from Tokyo Ellie Simmonds took it to twitter to confirm that she hanged up her swimming goggles.
