Former U.S women’s football coach Jill Ellis named as the new FIFA leader of the Technical Advisory Group

Jill Ellis

The World Cup winning coach Jill Ellis has been named by FIFA to lead in the future of Women’s Soccer as the governing body speeds up its campaign to turn the tournament into a biennial event (taking place every year).

Ellis led the U. S to win World Cup titles consecutively in 2015 and 2019 before vacating her position, she has also won four Olympics gold medals in 1996,2004,2008 and 2012 and eight CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football) Gold Cups. After vacating her position Ellis was named as the President of San Diego’s International Women’s Soccer League expansion team.

Ellis’s new role given by FIFA is to examine changes to the international match calendar and competitive balance in the global football game, as the Women’s World Cup and Continental events such as the European Championship, Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup are held in odd numbered years meanwhile the Men’s World Cup and Euros are held in even numbered years along with the Olympics soccer tournament.

The current FIFA President Giovanni Infantino has confidence in Jill Ellis as he has mentioned that

“Jills experience and expertise, combined with her forward-looking mindset makes her the perfect candidate to explore and lead the way forward”

“There can’t be a World Championship or a major championship played on the women’s side on the same day as the men’s side, so just simple calendar alignment and working on it cooperatively,” said Ellis.
