Two Paramedics were taken to ICU after they were shot in a robbery at KwaMashu Health community center known as Poly clinic.
In a statement that was issued by the Derpartment of Health in KwaZulu Natal, the two paramedics were shot by armed men who wanted their cellphones.
“The men entered in the emergency section and they found the worker age 55 and he demand the worker to give his phone but the worker denied, and the suspect shoot him. The security other workers heard a gun shot and they rushed to the scene, and came across to find the suspect. A huge fight escalated when they tried to disarm and contain him unfortunately during the struggle the suspect shot another worker age 58 in the chest. They managed to confiscate the gun from him but the suspect managed to flee by jumping out of the clinic fence.” Said the statement
Minister of Health in KZN Nomagugu Simelane said this incident came as a shock to her but she is pleading that the police ought to do their job. Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala a spokesperson for the KwaZulu Natal SAPS said police are all out in a hunt for the suspect and will find him. Two cases were opened at KwaMashu police station. Another worker at the hospital who asked to remain anonyms said there is no safety or security at the clinic there are many incident like this that have happened before and they have reported it to the department but no action was taken.
Lunges Ndlovu of the Public Servants Association of South Africa PSA said the Department of Health must look at this matter of safety and security of their workers who work in townships hospital and clinic and in rural areas too because this will lead to workers not working at night that will be a problem to the society.
