Just after Covid-19 restrictions gets lifted, a new disease hits ground in South Africa. A first case of Monkey pox was recorded in Johannesburg confirmed by Health Minister, Joe Phaahla.

In the morning of Thursday 23 June 2022, South Africans woke up to news that the wearing of masks has be stopped with and the bad of mass gatherings are scrapped. However just hours later, the announcement of monkey pox detention were made by the Minister in a released statement.

“Late yesterday, I received a report from the National Health laboratory Services CEO that they have confirmed through laboratory tests the first case of monkeypox in South Africa. The patient is a 30 year old male from Johannesburg who has no travel history, meaning that this cannot be attributed to having been acquired outside South Africa.” said the Minister.

“The NICD is conducting online in service training for our health workers for them to be able to detect the disease so that the necessary laboratory tests can be done.” The disease had an outbreak in Europe, dominated by high numbers and is said to only spread through close droplets, therefore one will not contract the disease by being in the same room with an infected person. “Thus far it has been dominant in men who have set with men, but the main feature is hat transmission is through close contact.”
