Durban Woolies Looter Fires Attorney

Mbuso Moloi

July unrest woolies looter Mbuso Moloi, appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning. Moloi fired his attorney to apply for legal aid, with his R5000 bail application extended, the matter was adjourned to the end of May for the Legal Aid application. He faces charges of theft and public violence for allegedly looting a basket of goods from Woolworths.

Moloi was caught on camera, leaving a Woolworths store, in Glenwood with a basket full of goods, and getting into his Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe during the July looting unrest in KZN. He was arrested on July 28 by Francois Esterhuizen and RM (Rajen) Govender, of the Provincial Organized Crime Unit KZN.

According to Natasha Kara, spokesperson for the NPA, “Moloi had intended pleading guilty, but terminated services of his attorney due to fund issues.” As per his bail conditions, Moloi has been ordered to surrender his passport and not to leave the KwaZulu-Natal without consulting the investigating officer. People feel the case has been dragging for long since we are approaching a year since the unrest. Although some felt sorry for Moloi, some also felt he should sell his car to pay his lawyer, even though it was reported in the previous months that the car was repossessed.
