Suspects arrested following an ATM bombing

The police got notification of the ATM bombing, around 01:30 in the early morning of the 13th of May 2022. The suspects were arrested not long after the police were notified, leading to 5 suspects found and arrested. They had explosives and stained money, they were arrested under the suspicion of having a connection to the ATM bombing in Tshwane, Gauteng.

The suspects are facing charges of business robbery, possession of explosives, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said that four of the suspects were arrested in their safe house, numerous units of the South African Police Service were led to a safe house in Garankuwa.  However, during this raid, the other three suspects fled on foot. “The police followed up on those who escaped and arrested the fifth suspect.” One firearm was recovered following the arrest. The explosives and stained money that is suspected to have been taken from the bombed ATM was recovered at the safe house.

“This is a breakthrough for us as we had a number of ATM bombings in the past three months, especially in Tshawnae District. We believe these are the suspects responsible. Profiling will be conducted to link them to other ATM bombings” Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said. He also went on and thanked the units that responded to the bombing and were able to make arrests within a few hours of the crime being committed.
