Recently, allegations of there being a spike in human trafficking in Gauteng South Africa have come to light, the #TheTraffickingYouNeedToKnow campaign identified a few hotspots used for human trafficking recruitment. The areas in question with lots of human trafficking recruitment include Springs, Vereenining, Vanderbijlpark, Benoni, Sunnyside, Fordsburg and Krugerdorp.

There have been places identified as where the victims are allegedly being held at, such as Hillbrow, Springs, Randburg, Pretoria, Moreleta Park and Heidelburg. Human trafficking is a fast-growing in the criminal industry all around the world, believed to be generating more than R258 trillion per year. It was estimated that 2.8 out of every 1000 people in Africa were in modern-day slavery. 64% of the victims from Africa were children. The A21 SA’s manger, Katie Mondrau says human trafficking is at an all-time high, and often it goes unnoticed.

The #TheTraffickingYouNeedToKnow campaign aims to bring awareness to trafficking hotspots in SA. In South Africa, the place that has a human trafficking problem is reported to be Durban. There are girls as young as 10 years old being trafficked to the US. It is believed that most of the people who are targeted and exploited are foreign nationals.
