Former President Jacob Zuma, health report remains sketchy

Former President Jacob Zuma

It’s been six days since the former President Jacob Zuma was hospitalized, at a hospital outside Escort Correctional Centre, where he has been serving his sentence for contempt of court.

As prepared as he was, to serve his 15 months sentence, his health was of priority. Prior to his arrest last month, addressing his supporters he said that “sending me to jail during the height of a pandemic, at my age, is the same as sentencing me to death”.

After signaling defiance but running out of legal alternatives, Zuma consented to cooperate with the authorities at the eleventh hour after police commissioner Khehla Sitole paid him a visit at his house in Nkandla to defuse a potential constitutional crisis.

It’s been a month since Zuma have been serving his sentence, and the question of interest from his supporters and curious South Africans is; will he finish his 15 months sentence? Or he will be released on medical parole, as he is still in hospital.

His hospitalization did not come as a shock to his family, as they alleged that, the former President’s health has been of concern since he was allegedly poisoned in 2014.

The medical report was submitted yesterday to the Pietermaritzburg High Court as part of an argument to have his corruption case postponed.

According to the State, the doctor’s letter makes no mention of the medical condition Jacob Zuma has, however Zuma’s lawyer, Dali Mpofu, has defended the letter’s contents, claiming that the doctor would not have been allowed to reveal personal information concerning Zuma’s physical condition.

Meanwhile, the Pietermaritzburg High Court has ordered that it must receive Zuma’s medical report by Friday next week to ascertain his fitness to stand trial.

Zuma’s corruption trial has been postponed to 9 September 2021.
